RUC hosts the first United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Mock Negotiation Conference

The School of International Organizations of RUC held the first United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Model Negotiation Conference of RUC from December 18 to 20, 2020.

The conference was also hosted by the School of Environment, the School of Agriculture and Rural Development, the School of International Relations and the Model United Nations Association of RUC.

It aims to promote students' in-depth understanding of the urgency of China's participation in global governance of climate change, and improve students' ability and literacy to participate in climate change negotiations.

On the morning of December 19, the opening ceremony of the conference was held in the Yifu Hall of RUC. Guests from the School of International Organizations of RUC, School of Environment of RUC, School of Agriculture and Rural Development, State Environmental Protection Administration, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) China Office attended the opening ceremony.

The guests and all the delegates watched the promotional video of the conference entitled 'We are Acting on Climate Change'.

Shi Yan 'an, Executive Dean of the School of International Organizations and Director of the International Exchange Office of RUC, delivered a speech at the beginning. Shi Yan 'an said that climate change has always been a focus of concern for all countries in the world and an important agenda for sustainable development of the United Nations. He hoped the students would cherish the opportunity to accumulate experience in the simulation of climate change and lay a foundation for the future international stage.

Based on his own experience in participating in many international negotiations, Director Wang Zhijia encouraged the students to practice the basic principles of seeking truth from facts in the simulated climate negotiations through vivid practical experience, and grow into a talent who can talk and dare to talk on the international stage in the future.

Professor Chen Minpeng, the supervisor representative of the conference, said in his speech that from the perspective of negotiation experience, students are expected to repeatedly study and judge documents in international diplomatic negotiations, actively negotiate, and always maintain a rigorous and serious attitude towards academics. He hoped that they would take this opportunity to learn more, feel more and think more, and grow into reserve talents for international climate negotiations as soon as possible.

Mr. Lin Peiqing, the student representative of the conference, expressed his expectations for the conference, introduced the preparations for the conference to the guests and students present, and thanked the preparatory team for their hard work and all-out efforts.

The holding of the simulated climate negotiation Conference gave the young talents of RUC a chance to experience the academic atmosphere and international situation. He hoped that the students would take up the heavy responsibility to solve the problem of climate change for mankind.

Finally, several guests jointly announced that the first session of the Simulated Negotiation Conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at RUC has officially opened.

During the two and a half days of the conference, more than 70 representatives, 13 chairmen, more than 30 observers, and dozens of preparatory personnel and volunteers from the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Agriculture and Rural Development, the School of International Relations, the School of Environment worked together to ensure the smooth progress of the conference.

The conference was divided into two sessions, 'Adaptation Communication' (AC) and 'International Carbon Market Emissions Regulation' (ITMO).

During the two days of the conference, delegates detailed topics, resolved differences and disputes, and conducted detailed discussions on issues.

After the submission of relevant texts, after several rounds of speeches and consultations, they adhered to the concept of seeking common ground while shelving differences and actively sought common interests. In the end, the delegates successfully revised and adopted the text in accordance with the principle of consensus.

In the end, the advisor of the conference commented on the simulated climate negotiation conference of this year, saying that he was very pleased to see that the students of RUC were able to find the key points and points of negotiation in a short time, respond flexibly, and actively strive for interests, showing the outstanding diplomatic style of students at RUC.

A total of 23 delegates from the two sub-venues won the awards. The participating experts and scholars presented awards to the winning students respectively.

The first Simulated Negotiation Conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at Renmin University of China was successfully concluded.
